August Bonus Saturday – TWL Episode 14

Just when you thought you’d seen the back of triangles, a quick reminder of the Bonus Saturday format in a …. er ….

Book stuff: Here’s another one that’s been kicking around on my bookshelf a while, in fact, I think I’ve bought it more than once: Wishcraft, How To Get What You Really Want by Barbara Sher.

Barbara’s written many books and I think I first came across her through another of her books: the fabulously titled I Could Do Anything If I Only Knew What It Was. Which was absolutely me for years 🙂 I mention time and time again how I was always searching for something. A mission.

Anyway, Wishcraft isn’t to be dismissed as woo-woo, it’s quite far from it, although it does invite you to believe in a bit of Universe magic. Who wouldn’t benefit from that every now and again?

What I love most about Wishcraft is the communities Barbara encourages the reader to find. These are communities of people around you who hear what you want and believe that you will get it. However it’s no wish-and-sit-back, what is outlined is a detailed plan for anyone wanting to achieve something specific. Oh yes, all the details of every step you must take are here, with diagrams and illustrations. Barbara doesn’t know your dreams and goals, but she does know how to help you get them. It’s no surprise that community is the key … oh and actually getting started. That’s another step people seem to forget.

Here’s a wonderful map of someone making plans to get into Med School.

I do like a plan.

One day I would love to set up communities to help people get something they want. I’m so clear about this that I’ve already formed the company, bought the domain name and have it all thought through. Clearly I still use Barbara’s approach to getting what I want to this day.

Habit stuff: I tried to think of a more interesting topic, but I feel I need to get this habit out of the way early in the Bonus Saturday series. It may be dull, but it is life-changing for some: organising your food.

There y’go, you’ve switched off and you don’t even know what I was going to say. I don’t blame you though, if you’re not that bothered about what you eat every day then organising food can be a chore. If you LOVE food, then you’ll probably consider food organising in a different way, which might become apparent if you read on.

Like with most things, I want to get food ‘right’. I want to eat well, not break the bank with every food shop and get a meal prepped and ready within 20-30 minutes. I don’t feel the need to ‘diet’ as such, but I am slightly obsessed with eating things that are good for me. I think this is to try and make up for all the times I decided a cup of tea and an entire packet of chocolate biscuits was a sound breakfast choice. I was young, what can I say?

My simple habit is this: plan all the meals for the week, including lunches and snacks (I don’t often want snacks but it’s always best to have something to hand, in case the urge strikes. Under these circumstances, popping to the shop to pick something up is NEVER a good idea). When the planning is done, shop once a week and resist the urge to go again until the following week.

Planning the week’s food, in a calm and organised manner, allows the right decisions to be made. Do I have to spell it out? No last-minute temptation in the cake aisle, no scraping around in the freezer for ANYTHING to cook in a starvation-induced panic, no ‘what shall we eat tonight’ misery discussions with your loved ones (or is that just me?). And for you foodies, you might be able to see how a plan could help you spend less, or try more recipes, or use up leftovers (or those forgotten lurkees in the freezer).

You don’t have to go all-in at first – just think what meals would you make for each night next week?

Oh and if you’re already a food planner then high-five us eh?

Fun stuff: oh no, another video. I can see this is going to be a habit for the fun stuff 😉 This week I’m indulging in one of the things I want to do more of. Dancing used to be HUGE in my life and I recently decided I wanted to be around music and to get moving with it. Ahem – this video was taken, a few days ago at the Notting Hill Carnival, where I found myself out front of the wonderful Batala. Enjoy 🙂

See you next week for the new topic: Neurological Levels. There’s some big thinking coming your way.

As ever, I’m always available for questions and comments and you can leave your thoughts here or, if you’d like The Wandering Lightbulb delivered fresh into your inbox every Saturday, you can join me here. A very warm welcome is always waiting 🙂
